AWG is another method used in the fabrication of DWDM. It is a grating formed by an array of optical waveguides arranged with specific lengths, capable of wavelength division. It is mainly used in the production of high-density wavelength multiplexers/demultiplexers (DWDM). The principle is as follows: the light source (containing modulated signals of multiple wavelengths) is first divided by a wavelength division element into several to dozens of sub-light sources with roughly equal amplitudes. These sub-light sources are then sequentially guided into an array of waveguides designed with specific lengths, each having a specific output phase. After passing through multiple output coupling elements, constructive interference occurs at specific positions for light sources of particular wavelengths, resulting in output. This allows different wavelength light sources (signals) to be distributed or extracted, achieving the purpose of wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing.
